The answer is, 24 hours in a day. They wake up just like you and start every day with 24 hours, yet they control and manage Billions even Trillions of dollars every day. So how do these guys do so much in the same time as you have? I can sum it up in two words delegation and systems.
Sounds easy enough but is it? Do you have what it takes to delegate and automate your daily tasks? How about that one client you always handle just because? Or better yet the “mail”? Who doesn’t love to spend valuable time going through the mail? I mean why pay someone $8.00 an hour to do this when you can do it yourself (at a cost of what $150.00, maybe $200.00 per hour)?
If you are going to take it to the next level you will need to master these two key concepts. Let’s tackle the first one, Delegation. How can you sleep at night if you aren’t doing everything or more realistically how do you sleep at night after doing everything? Probably like a baby, up every two hours crying all night. If you can take small steps everyday like shedding the little 10, 20 even 30 minute tasks that kill your time over the course of a month, you are going to gain hours maybe days that you can use for more productive tasks.
You just have to let go and I know it’s hard. I am starting an agent’s support group for chronic letter openers, I will let you know when a spot opens up, we are all full up now.
Systems are next. If you have ever read a biography of a super successful person they all have systems. I am not talking about the same system you have always used doing the same thing everyday hoping for different results. I mean an actual written process with defined steps for each action you or your staff performs.
I first stumbled across this theory when I was a fresh young agent. One of the old guys came by and said “Here you go kid. Read this book if you want to stick around.” It was the E-myth by Michael Gerber. That book really opened my eyes to how to run a business and how to use systems to replace myself. I didn’t stop with this book but it helped me understand the need for me to design a system for every job and task in my agency if I wanted to stick around much less grow without going crazy.
After my first son came along, I kicked it in gear, after my twins came along (kids 3 & 4) I had everything in place and I was able to take weeks off without worrying about my agency. All because we had every process designed out with a defined method.
My question to you is, do you have systems in your agency that delegates your sales, marketing, cross selling and retention even when you are on the golf course, out fishing or just spending time doing what you love the most? If you don’t it’s not too late to start. You just need to take the hardest step; that’s the first one. Then the next few get easier with each successful stride forward.
