Every Sunday night I’d feel the sickness.

The pit in my stomach -- the gnawing feeling of showing up at work every morning without any leads.

I felt the pain, fear and anxiety of making the cold calls each day. The pressure of not providing for my family like a man should.

Monday Mornings Sucked.

I hated that guilt. Seeing the phone there, daring me to pick it up and make some calls. Knowing I should, but always finding some other papers to push around to avoid it.

I started that fateful May 1st day on the job with a phone book and telephone.

No computer, no client list, not even any training about insurance.

I started making the cold calls, setting up appointments, and generally getting kicked around like a stray ‘sector’ dog (as they call them in Santiago, Chile) with mange and disease.

I don’t either.

The great news is that you don’t have to be treated poorly by your clients and prospects. It all has to do with positioning. If you are positioned as a beggar, calling and chasing them down, you’ll get treated just like that.

Shunned…disrespected…and as a result you won’t make any money.

Now contrast that with being positioned as the expert, and they are calling you for advice. You’ll be treated like a respected, trusted advisor, plus you’ll make TONS more money. Your whole world changes when they call you instead of you chasing them.

Now don’t get me wrong, I made good money. I was successful at making cold calls, and writing business. I worked hard, too hard. And cold calling is THE SLOW BOAT to China.

One day I was walking past one of the Agency principles’ office. I heard him begging. That’s right. Begging his client not to move his business …Like a dog.

It was the most pathetic display of cowardice I think I’ve ever seen.

It disgusts me to think about it.

I vividly remember walking toward my cubicle saying to myself, "I will never allow myself to be treated like a dog by my clients again."

Here was a 50+ year old man making a great income, but with no self respect.
We don’t want to be that guy. No one does.

So after making a decision to attract clients to me, to position myself as the expert, not a peon, to be the trusted advisor, not the ‘insurance guy'... my prayers were answered, and I was blessed in a way I could have never imagined.

On my way home from getting stomped on by a prospect I heard a commercial on the radio advertising a marketing seminar for free.

  1. You don’t make as much money when you are slashing prices and commissions constantly. This is not advanced math folks. Smaller premiums = smaller commissions.
  1. You get crummy clients when all you offer is cheap price and good service. Offering good service and expecting people to buy because of it is a fools errand. Every agent claims it and it’s so generic it’s meaningless. 

Marketing Tip:

You must spell out specifically what you do better than EVERYONE else, if you want to win the business.

Avoid platitudes and generalities like “first class service” that mean nothing to people.
Instead use specifics like: “We guarantee to return your call in 24 hours or I’ll send you a 10$ gift card to the movies”

Now they can actually believe you’re going to give them good service, and what good service actually MEANS.


Back to your NEW and IMPROVED day at the office.

After calling back a couple of leads and writing a new policy, you check some email and hear the phone ring again.

The sound of the phone has transformed from a dreaded piercing noise, to the welcome sound of a cash register. Now instead of clients calling to ask you about some idiotic billing question, you pick up the phone and talk to a red hot, interested, usually very qualified prospect.

A prospect who already respects you--because of your positioning --isn’t just calling for a cheap price, but is calling because they need your HELP.

So you write another policy, right there on the phone without even leaving the office!

(From there you put your client on a simple retention system that nurtures them and turn them into a raving fan who refers you clients like crazy.).

Then the phone rings again and it’s like they say  “Wash, rinse, and repeat.” I add to this formula: “Then cash the check!”

This can be your life every day. I know because I did it myself, along with dozens of other agents that I know and coach.

It’s amazing what happens in your life when you make this change.

You enjoy work 1000 times more. I started having fun again. I was energized--the pit in my stomach and the guilt went away.

MATURE CONTENT:

My income jumped dramatically and this has a whole list of benefits…without being to descriptive here, one of the biggest was a dramatically improved love life.

Irreverent as it may seem, in my ‘first life’ as a struggling, worried agent, I would often argue with my wife about finances late at night. I’d have the calculator out crunching the numbers trying to balance the family budget. (We didn’t have a federal bailout for my finances.)

(Needless to say, arguing about money, being worried about work, feeling guilty about not making the money you want, does not create the ideal sex life between you and your spouse.)

BUT…once the money is rolling in, you’re energized about your work, it’s fun and enjoyable, and you aren’t feeling sick or fighting about finances, it makes the love life a lot more… shall we say…lively.

I still remember pulling out on 700 East in my little used car on September 11th 2001.

I turned on the radio and heard them talking about bombings, and planes crashing. It was crazy. It’s one of those moments you’ll never forget until the day you die.

It just so happened that I’d been studying a lot about marketing right during this time.  I started implementing some of what I was learning right after 9/11 happened.

For many agents this was a terrible time…but not for me.

They were scared about their future. Insurance companies were stressed financially because of the huge loss  in the Twin Towers. And the economy was having a tough go.
